Guide for support coordinators and support workers

Disability support worker activity ideas for teenagers -- Egg Academy offers live online creative sessions from home; families enrol via Starter Course.

If you support a teenager or young adult who might fit Egg Academy, this page summarises what we offer so you can share it with the family or guardian who makes enrolment decisions. Worth knowing: teens log in as an Egg avatar on screen -- peers see their work first, which helps many disabled and neurodivergent teens who struggled in physical spaces.

What Egg Academy is

Egg Academy is an online creative education community for young people aged 10 and older in New Zealand. Teens join live, facilitator-led weekday sessions on egg.ac -- digital art, animation, game design, music production, video, and nine other Egg-Xplore starter subjects. It is ongoing membership-style learning, not a one-off holiday programme.

Why families mention belonging

Teens show up as an Egg avatar on screen -- what they look like behind the camera matters less than what they make. Online, physical access, appearance, sensory overload, and social judgment often land differently than in a studio or hall. Many disabled and neurodivergent teens find Egg works when other programmes did not. After the Starter Course, facilitators learn each teen's pace and tailor challenges from there. Full detail: Anyone can be an Egg.

Typical schedule and format

  • Core timetable: Mon-Fri, 4:00-6:00pm New Zealand time (online from home)
  • Entry path: Egg-Xplore Digital Creativity -- 10 weeks, $249 + GST, small groups (up to 10 per facilitator)
  • After Egg-Xplore: optional Community Access at $40/month (GST inclusive)
  • Session rhythm: gathering, icebreaker, community brief, creative time, showcase -- see how a session works
Additional session times may open when demand grows (for example homeschool or older-teen groups).

Why disabled and neurodivergent teens often fit

The online format removes many physical and social barriers: optional camera, quiet spaces, facilitator-led moderation, and project briefs adapted within live sessions. Teens belong through their Egg avatar and their work -- not through performing in a physical room. See autism-friendly classes, ADHD-friendly classes, and teen isolated at home.

How enrolment works (family-led)

Enrolment is through the family or legal guardian, not through support agencies directly:

  1. Explore -- how it works, observe a session, or share learn pages with the family
  2. Sign up as Family -- register interest or book a free tour via egg.ac
  3. Family check-in -- short online call with a parent present (~15 minutes)
  4. Starter Course enrolment -- next scheduled intake (train departure)
See joining process.

What families enrol in

  • Online creative education on egg.ac -- facilitator-led weekday sessions (Mon-Fri 4-6pm NZ)
  • Egg-Xplore Starter Course then optional Community Access
  • Family-led enrolment -- Sign up as Family, family check-in, Starter Course intake
  • Private fees billed to families ($249 + GST for Egg-Xplore, then $40/month membership)

Safety and moderation

Sessions are facilitator-led with police-checked staff, recorded sessions, and staged moderation responses. Parents receive visibility through showcases and Starter Course reports. Read safety and moderation and is Egg Academy safe?
