Autism-friendly creative classes for teens
Online social groups for autistic teens in NZ -- predictable Egg Academy sessions, special interests, optional camera, Egg avatars on screen.
Autistic teens often excel when structure is clear, special interests are honoured, and social demands are flexible. Egg Academy combines predictable weekday sessions (Mon-Fri, 4-6pm NZ), passion-led creative projects, and facilitator support. Teens log in with an Egg avatar -- peers see their work and chat first, not how they look behind the camera.

Predictable structure, same rhythm every weekday
Egg Academy weekday sessions follow the same rhythm: gathering, icebreaker, community brief, creative time, showcase, wrap-up (Mon-Fri, 4-6pm NZ on egg.ac). Teens know what is coming. During the Starter Course, each week has one Egg-Xplore subject and one set challenge for the whole small group -- not open-ended chaos. See the full timetable on how a session works.
Online, the work comes first
Teens log in as an Egg avatar -- a creative character on screen. In chat and showcase, peers and facilitators respond to ideas and projects before anything else. That can feel very different from a physical room where appearance, sensory overload, or social judgment land first. Many autistic teens tell us Egg is the first place they felt they could settle in and make. After Egg-Xplore, facilitators adjust challenges to each teen's pace. Read more in Anyone can be an Egg.
Special interests as a bridge into projects
Egg-Xplore samples ten digital-creative subjects -- animation, game design, 2D art, character design, music production, 3D modelling, graphic design, coding and storytelling, visual design, and video editing. Many autistic teens enter through a existing passion (games, characters, music, building worlds) and deepen from there. Facilitators can suggest extensions when a teen finishes quickly. See strengths-based creative learning.
Communication on their terms
Camera is optional in every live session. A microphone is required equipment so voice is available when your teen is ready -- many start with text chat first and speaking is never forced. Participation happens through project work, screen sharing, and chat -- not forced eye contact or performance. The only brief video hello is the one-time family check-in (about 15 minutes, parent present) before enrolment.
Quiet spaces and flexible attendance
Teens can move to breakout or quiet spaces when the main room feels like too much, arrive late, leave early, or step away during a session. Drop-in attendance during 4-6pm hours suits teens whose energy or focus comes in bursts. See sensory-friendly learning from home and sensory-friendly online sessions.
Connection through making, not small talk drills
Egg Academy is project-led -- teens connect around shared creative work, feedback, and showcase. Groups are approximately ten teens per facilitator, grouped close in age. Conversation grows from shared interests and making together. For broader social context see social difficulties and creative community.
What parents and facilitators see
During the Starter Course you get individual student reports at Week 2, Week 6, and Week 10, plus daily showcases and creative outputs you can browse. After Egg-Xplore, membership facilitators choose from suggested challenges matched to skill level and interests. See how to see what your teen made and how Egg Academy works.
