Animation courses for teens

Egg Academy teaches animation through live online sessions -- frame-by-frame motion, character work, and portfolio projects for NZ teens.

Egg Academy teaches animation through live online sessions and project-based challenges - teens learn frames, timing, and storytelling through motion while building work they can share with a like-minded creative community.

What teens learn in animation

Animation at Egg Academy is hands-on from the start. During Egg-Xplore, teens sample animation through Sid's Trials - a short challenge focused on frames, timing, and a loop that reads clearly. As they progress, they can go deeper into:

  • Keyframe timing, spacing, and easing
  • Character poses and motion that sells action
  • Short animated loops and portfolio-ready showcase pieces
  • Feedback from facilitators and peers in live sessions

How animation fits Egg Academy

Animation is part of our Media curriculum quadrant - alongside digital art, video, 3D, and design. Teens do not sit in a lecture; they make work, share it in the community, and build confidence over time. See the full curriculum & outcomes and the creator journey from first projects to specialisation.

Many teens discover animation after enjoying games, YouTube, or drawing. If that sounds like your child, see Egg Academy for creators - written for teens and parents exploring whether this is the right fit. Parents planning a senior path (Years 11, 12, or 13), or a foundation course before tertiary providers, should start with digital art and animation pathway (Senior).

Common questions

What age can my teen start learning animation at Egg Academy?
Creators aged 10 and older can join. Beginners start with guided challenges during Egg-Xplore; teens with experience can go deeper on personal animation projects.
Does my teen need animation software before joining?
A basic computer or laptop with a mouse is enough to start. Facilitators introduce free and industry-standard tools during live sessions and help during weekly check-ins.
Is this like a school animation class?
Sessions are project-led and community-based, not exam-focused. Teens learn by making - short loops, character tests, and portfolio pieces - with facilitator support and peer feedback.
What animation skills do teens actually learn?
Foundational timing and spacing, keyframes, character motion, and short animated loops. Animation sits in our Media curriculum alongside video, art, and design - see our full curriculum.
How often are animation sessions?
Live creative sessions run Monday-Friday, 4:00-6:00pm NZ time. Membership includes unlimited attendance during those hours - many teens come several days a week.
